The Tales That Never End

JRR Tolkien

Learning Shire founder and lead facilitator, Patricia Webb, offers workshops of emotional and spiritual development based on “the tales that really matter”, stories that take us “past the happiness and into grief and beyond it.” These stories never end because they become part of us, showing us possibilities we may never have known existed – challenging us not to turn back from the hope they inspire. Entering such tales imaginatively is a courageous and transformative act. If we can bear the uncertainty of not knowing quite what we’ve “fallen into”, these stories will guide us, revealing something of the path we must learn to walk to fulfill the highest and best purposes we can envision for our own lives.

“NIGHT JOURNEY on BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

"This is how I would die
into the love I have for you:
as pieces of cloud
dissolve in sunlight."

-Jelaluddin Rumi, 13th c. Sufi Islamic mystical poet & teacher

The “dark night of the soul” is a spiritual journey shrouded in mystery and sorrow … yet night is also the realm of lovers. In the mystical literature of the dark night, the path of the soul’s emergence is found in the sensuous art of Lover & Beloved, a way of compassion that traverses all faiths, every continent, and ten-thousand years of human culture.

Join us as we explore the awakening of two unlikely souls to their dark night of passion, sorrow and undying love, in the exquisite art of Brokeback Mountain. Drawing on a rich palette of activities, from drawing and “free writing”, to personal reflection and small group work, we’ll follow paths extending beyond the familiar scenery of “falling in love”… to landscapes of spirit where rivers run fast and the ceaseless wind sculpts everything in its reach.

Unlike classes presenting the meaning of a story, you’ll be free to discover your own understanding of the layers and dimensions of meaning woven through the short story and film. In the process, you’ll seize truths relevant to your own place on the mystical path and consider possibilities for change in your life… and your world.

Hearts Broken Open

“HEARTS BROKEN OPEN:
Paths of Nonviolence in the Art of
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

“There are at least two ways to understand what it
means to have a broken heart.”

-Parker Palmer, Quaker master teacher and social activist

Our hearts need not be shattered by suffering; they can be broken open to a greater capacity for both truth and tenderness … opened to ways of living powerfully and compassionately in a suffering world.

Join us for this unforgettable journey charting the paths of hope in the award-winning film, Brokeback Mountain. We’ll draw back the veil on the many hidden forms of violence, its cultural effects, and the cycle it creates. We’ll trace our personal responses to violence and explore characteristics of a “third way” of response: one that transcends rage and retribution, tapping reservoirs of strength that make it possible to live in the world a different way.

From the beautiful yet brutal drama of predators and prey in the wilderness … to the human struggle to maintain hope in the face of impossible odds … a broken heart can be a source of power.
